George Leroy Engel
George Leroy Engel, 77, passed away on April 19, 2026. Born on October 17, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York, George was a man whose kind, loving, and funny spirit touched everyone who knew him. He will be remembered for his warm smile, unmistakable grey eyes, and the easy laughter he brought into every room.
Brooklyn raised and proud of it, George answered his country’s call as a Vietnam veteran, a service that shaped his steadfast character and deep sense of loyalty. Later, he forged a long and dependable career with the New York Transit Authority, where his work ethic, reliability, and good humor earned the respect of colleagues and commuters alike. Away from work, George found joy in life’s simple pleasures: time spent with family and friends, the sound of golden oldies spinning in the background, and the comfort of a cold beer shared among good company. He loved to tell jokes and gather with his buddies for a couple of “cold ones,” and he delighted in calling himself the “Bald Eagle,” a playful nod to his pride as a veteran. Known as both a tough guy and a softie at the same time, George led with a big heart—quick to offer a hand, a laugh, or a familiar piece of advice: “Drink more beer.”
Above all, George cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Albania Engel; his loving daughter, Jacqueline Engel; his adored granddaughter, Briana Garcia; and his dear sister, Joann Clark. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he in theirs. Family gatherings—filled with music, stories, and George’s signature one-liners—were his happiest moments, and his legacy will live on in the love and traditions he nurtured.
George leaves behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and laughter—a reminder to savor the small moments, look after one another, and keep the music playing. In his honor, may we share a joke, raise a glass, and hold our loved ones a little closer. The family wishes to thank Hospice for their support and assistance during this difficult time. You are all truly angels; we could never have imagined what our family would have done without you. We also extend heartfelt thanks to the nurses from Oak Hill Hospital for the compassionate care given to George during his stay. Our family deeply appreciates all of your help and support.
