James Gerald Costa
James Gerald Costa, 69, passed away on November 13, 2025. Born on May 22, 1956, in Wareham, Massachusetts and raised in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Jim was a loving husband and brother, a champion for the environment, and a good friend to many. He was widely known for his humor, generosity, and selfless service to his community—qualities that defined both the way he lived and the legacy he leaves behind.
A proud Navy Veteran, Jim answered the call to serve his country early in life, laying the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to helping others. He went on to a distinguished career as a firefighter, where courage, calm under pressure, and compassion were his hallmarks. When not on duty, Jim found solace and joy on the water. An avid boater, he believed our coastal places were treasures to be cared for, not merely enjoyed. True to his guiding words—“It feels Good to Do Good”—he organized and joined countless coastal cleanups, turning free time into service time.
Jim’s commitment to community was as steady as the tides. He poured his energy into organizations that reflected his values, including Suncoast Aqua Ventures, CCA, Suncoast Fools, the Knights of Columbus, China Post #1 (American Legion), and the FMCA Challengers. Whether hauling debris from a mangrove line, lending a hand to a friend in need, or sharing a quick laugh at just the right moment, Jim made people feel seen, supported, and safe. He was the first to show up and the last to seek recognition.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Martha Costa; his sisters, Peggy Costa Prins and Kathy O’Brian; his many neices and nephews; and his beloved dog, Millie. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends, neighbors, fellow veterans, and firefighting colleagues who will remember his steadfast reliability, bright spirit, and ready smile.
If he could be remembered for one thing, Jim would want it to be the simple power of kindness in action. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Suncoast Aqua Ventures (https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2614949) or Tidewell Hospice (https://tidewellfoundation.org). Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the fact that he’s in a better place. Many thanks to Tidewell Hospice for easing his transition.
A Celebration of Life will be held December 7th, 2025 at 55 Horseshow Loop Rd, Terra Ceia, FL 34250. Additional information can be found on the invitation (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/jim-costas-celebration-of-life-tickets-1972835989552?aff=oddtdtcreator)
