James Thompson Shaw
James Thompson Shaw, known to many as Jim, passed away on January 25, 2026, at the age of 74. Born on February 28, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, Jim was the embodiment of three enduring qualities: dependable, principled, and resilient. He was most known for his unwavering self-reliance and his steadfast devotion to the safety and well-being of his family—a commitment that guided every stage of his life. His favorite counsel, “Be true to yourself and your word,” was not merely a saying but a standard he lived by and generously shared.
After earning his B.A. in Business Administration in 1974, Jim answered a higher calling to service. He served as a Naval officer from 1974 to 1978, achieving the rank of lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve. Upon completing his military service, he pursued the law with equal discipline and heart, receiving his J.D. from Western New England College School of Law in 1981. Jim’s dedication to community ran deep: he served as a firefighter and EMT with both the Warren Volunteer Fire Department and the Kent Volunteer Fire Department. He was also proud to be a Knight of the Order of Saint Joachim, reflecting his quiet commitment to service, honor, and duty. Outside of uniform and beyond his professional endeavors, Jim embraced life with curiosity and joy—traveling widely, savoring opera, hiking new trails, flying his plane, golfing with friends, and finding peace on the water while boating. Whatever the pursuit, he met it with gratitude and a steady hand.
Above all, Jim treasured his family and the circle of close friends he made during his college years and naval service. He was a protector by instinct and by choice, the one who made sure everyone got home safely, the one who answered the late-night call, and the one whose calm presence was a reassurance in any storm. His legacy lives on in the people he loved and the communities he served.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, the family will hold a private scattering of his ashes on February 11, 2026. Those who wish to honor his memory may consider a donation to TidewellFoundation.org. As Jim often reminded those around him, “Life is to be enjoyed and shared with one another!” The family extends heartfelt thanks to HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital, Dr. Kareem Eid, Florida Cancer Specialists, Dr. Stephen Vara, and Tidewell Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
