John Burkowski
John Burkowski, born May 14, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 10, 2026. Known for his encyclopedic depth of knowledge and charmed quick wit, John was a man of probity and sincerity.
An avid reader and fisherman, John served in U.S. Army Intelligence before dedicating over 35 years to education as a revered Social Studies teacher at South Dade Senior High School. His commitment to students earned him recognition as a Miami-Dade County Public Schools District Finalist for Teacher of the Year. John’s influence extended beyond the classroom as a longstanding sponsor of the Key Club, President of Kiwanis International, Kiwanian of the Year, and an advisor in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
John’s storytelling ability and love for his family, especially his grandchildren, defined much of his life. His sense of humor and loyalty shone through, notably during football season as he proudly supported the Florida State Seminoles, relishing the reactions while donning his FSU gear amidst rivals at the Orange Bowl. He often shared the phrase, “illegitimi non carborundum,” conveying resilience and strength.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sandra; sons Keith, Michael, Brannon, and Johnny; daughters-in-law Patty, Sheila, Missy, and Alex; cherished grandchildren Rachel, Tannah, Riley, John Anthony, and Matthew; and great-grandchild Lenora. His beloved dog, Reggie, was also a significant companion in his life.
Though memorial details are yet to be decided, the family expresses a desire to keep his spirit and teachings alive, saying, “We will always cherish his love, guidance, and inspiration to our family and world.”
