John “Russell” Lee, a loving husband, devoted father, and accomplished pilot, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, surrounded by family in Sarasota, Florida.

Born February 7, 1942 on Long Island in New York, Russell’s adventurous spirit and love for the skies defined much of his life. He proudly served and retired as a DC-9 Captain for US Airways. He began flying for Allegheny Airlines which became USAir renamed US Airways which merged with American Airlines. In his lifetime he flew aircraft of all shapes and sizes – and owned 14 small airplanes over the years. His passion for aviation was matched only by his dedication to his family.

“Russ” was known for his unwavering loyalty, strength, and the joy he found in sharing life’s adventures with those he loved. His greatest pride was his family: his beloved wife of 52 years, Claudia Lee of Sarasota FL. Children: Carol Smith of Plainfield VT, Patricia and her husband Chris Schwager of Bella Vista AR, and the late Christopher Lee. Three grandchildren: Caleb Schwager of Bella Vista AR, Joshua and Madison Smith of Plainfield, VT and eight great-grandchildren. Brother-in law-and wife, Dwight and Debbie Sullivan of Venice FL and niece Sophia and her husband Jason Edwards of Denver CO. Katherine Lee of Venice FL, wife of deceased brother, Thomas A. Lee.

While his professional achievements were remarkable, it was Russell’s heart that left the deepest impression. He was a man who could never be summed up by a single story – there were simply too many moments of kindness, humor, and generosity to count.

The family wishes to thank the Tidewell Hospice Village On The Isles staff and caretakers for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Russell’s memory to Tidewell Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Russell’s legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the skies he conquered, and the family he loved beyond measure. Later on the family will hold a “Celebration of his Life”.
