Johnny Lee Pennington
Johnny Lee Pennington, 84, of Beverly Hills, Florida, passed away on May 26, 2026. Born on September 7, 1941, in Red Star, West Virginia, Johnny lived a life defined by dedication, warmth, and steady devotion to the people and communities he loved.
Dependable, friendly, and a true role model, Johnny was known for his hardworking and loyal nature and for his remarkable ability to make friends wherever he went. He worked for more than 41 years in the West Virginia coal industry, where he earned the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic and unwavering reliability.
Music was one of his lifelong passions. He loved playing the drums, listening to 1950s and 1960s music, and working with WVOW. He also faithfully served as a church sound director in West Virginia, combining his technical skills with his commitment to his church family. A devoted sports fan, Johnny rarely missed an opportunity to watch the West Virginia Mountaineers or Logan High School teams. He poured his support into his own children as well, coaching and umpiring little league sports and cheering them on in all their pursuits. In recent years, he volunteered with the Citrus County Crime Watch and at Logan Regional Medical Center, continuing his lifelong pattern of service.
Affectionately nicknamed "Moe" in his younger years because he went home every day on his lunch break to watch The Three Stooges, Johnny would often joke, "I never answer to Johnny, I'm just MOE!" He was also known for one simple but telling trait—he always arrived early for everything. That reliability reflected the steady presence he was in the lives of those around him.
Johnny is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, of Beverly Hills, Florida; his daughter, Sheryl Lynn (Chuck) Holstein of Lecanto, Florida; his sons, Johnny Lee Pennington, Jr. (Erin) of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, and Chad Warner Pennington (Ashley) of Clarksville, Ohio; grandchildren Jordn Michele (Joseph) DiLascio of Tampa, Florida, Addison Cayn (Kallie) Holstein of Memphis, Tennessee, Sidney Lynn (Anthony) Watkins of Navarre, Florida, Danielle (Danny) Garcia of Gainesville, Florida, and Emerson Ryan Pennington of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania; great-grandchildren Joseph DiLascio Jr., Marie DiLascio, Dawson Cayn Holstein, Gavin Garcia, and Riley Garcia; family members Ron and Lynn Adkins, Sharon Stafford, and Phyllis Soler of Logan, WV, Michele James of Atlanta, GA, Brandon, Cynthia, Laikyn, Camille, and Autumn Violet of Forrest Hills, KY. He is also survived by special friends like Justin Turner and numerous others throughout West Virginia and Florida.
Johnny loved animals throughout his life and was especially fond of the many dogs he owned over the years, along with a special cat named Maddie.
The family is deeply grateful to the staff at Citrus Memorial Hospital and VITAS Hospice for the exceptional care shown to Johnny and to them during this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seven Rivers Church in Lecanto, Florida, First Baptist Church of McConnell, West Virginia, or the Citrus County Sheriff's Youth Ranch.
