Julius Cecil Mills
Julius Cecil Mills, a gentle, sarcastic, and loving soul known for his humor and unforgettable storytelling, passed away on November 13, 2025, at the age of 52. Born on January 19, 1973, in East Chicago, Indiana, Julius filled every room with warmth, wit, and a steady kindness that made people feel seen and cared for. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father, and a steady friend whose spirit uplifted those around him.
Julius’ life was centered on the things that mattered most: music, family, and cooking. He could turn a kitchen into a gathering place and a simple meal into a celebration. He loved to sing—especially the classics—and had a gift for turning everyday moments into stories that brought people together. When the noise of life got too loud, he was famous for settling the room with a grin and a single word: “CHURCH.” Beyond his home, Julius quietly made a difference in his community by helping deliver Meals on Wheels to neighbors in need. He never turned a blind eye; if help was asked, his answer was simple: “Yes, I got it,” and he let go of the rest. His tender bond with the family cat, Lucky, said as much about his heart as any speech ever could.
Julius is cherished and deeply missed by his wife, Xaviera; his daughters, Jaya, Jana, and Kemilya; his mother-in-law, Roselyn; his nieces, Essence, Londyn, and Cashmere; his sister and brother-in-law, Kari and CJ Sylvester; his brother, Edward; his sister-in-law, Antonette; his aunt and uncle, Erica and Reggie King; and his auntie-in-law, Angie. He is also lovingly remembered by his adopted nephew, Renagello; his goddaughter, Zanea; and dear friends, Randy, Chante, Richard, and Grady. Lucky, the family cat, will miss his calm presence and steady affection.
In his final days, Julius showed the same courage and tenderness that defined his life. He fought a good fight, not for himself alone, but to give those he loved time to hold on and to begin to understand. He sang, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” spoke of a cruise, and shared that he had been talking to God—words that brought comfort and peace. As his loved one wrote: “Your body may have been tattered and torn, but your spirit was never withered and worn… Take your well-deserved rest, my love, my partner, my gentle giant, my friend.” With gratitude, the family thanks the Tidwell hospice staff and its volunteers—you are doing the Lord’s work. May Julius’ legacy of kindness, laughter, and generosity continue to guide all who were blessed to know him.
