Lee Richard Sumpter, III
Lee Richard Sumpter III—known to many readers as L. R. Sumpter—passed away, leaving a legacy defined by generous mentorship, intellectual fearlessness, and a lifelong reverence for learning. A teacher, writer, and tireless explorer of ideas, Lee devoted himself to sharing knowledge and encouraging curiosity in others. His life bridged classrooms and continents, technical pursuits and spiritual study, the written word and the wide, restorative outdoors. Those who knew him will remember a gentle humor, a methodical mind, and the steady presence of a man who believed that questions, honestly asked, could light the way.
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Lee built a vocation that spanned more than 35 years of teaching across elementary, secondary, and higher education settings. He taught, published articles, and presented papers in two languages, modeling the diligence and clarity he asked of his students. Before and alongside his academic work, he spent many years in engineering and sales, experiences that sharpened both his analytical approach and his practical wisdom. He traveled widely—through 48 states and 10 foreign countries—collecting perspectives, landscapes, and friendships. In retirement, he embraced full-time study and writing on unorthodox subjects, drawing on his deep interests in ancient and modern history, spiritual traditions, geology, and geography. An author of four books, he wrote with the patience of a researcher and the spirit of a teacher, always inviting the reader along for the discovery.
Beyond the page and the podium, Lee found renewal outdoors—hiking, boating, and fishing—and, most of all, in time spent with those he loved. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Stephen Sumpter, and by the many family members, friends, students, and readers whose paths crossed his classroom or his work. For generations of learners, he was the steady hand who opened doors; for colleagues, a generous collaborator; for his family, a source of quiet strength and constant encouragement.
May his legacy endure in the questions he inspired, the pages he left behind, and the lives he helped shape. In honoring Lee’s memory, we carry forward his example: to look closely, think deeply, walk humbly, and keep learning. He will be remembered by his family, friends, students and readers.
