Peter James Perry
Peter James Perry, 84, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, designer, pilot, and friend, passed away March 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by wit, integrity, and unwavering loyalty. Known for being funny, smart, and deeply principled, Peter was an affectionate and warm man whose humor and honesty made him beloved by all who knew him.
Born March 9, 1941 in Cardiff, Wales, Peter’s early years were shaped by history and resilience. As a child he endured the German bombing campaigns of World War II and later lived in Germany during the reconstruction years. His childhood continued across continents—he graduated from the Prince of Wales School in Nairobi, Kenya, during the Mau Mau rebellion before eventually emigrating to Detroit, Michigan during the turbulent summer of 1967. These experiences helped shape Peter into a thoughtful and peace-loving man who would go on to live or work on every continent except Antarctica.
Peter enjoyed a remarkable 40-year career as a designer with Chrysler, earning numerous design awards and patents for automotive components. Among his proudest professional achievements was being part of the design group behind the original Ford GT40. Cars were his lifelong passion—an enthusiasm matched only by his love of flying. Peter held a private pilot’s license with an instrument rating and found great joy in the freedom of the sky. He was also an avid motorcyclist, photographer, and a devoted World War II history buff.
Outside his professional life, Peter dedicated himself to community and service. He was a vessel inspector for the Cape Coral Sail and Power Squadron and a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). He supported causes close to his heart, including Wounded Warriors, Boys Town, Voices for Lee County Animals, and many other animal welfare efforts. He was also a member of the Confederate Air Force.
Those who knew Peter best remember his razor-sharp wit, often quoting lines from Monty Python, and his trademark phrases: “It is what it is,” and “I get your drift—I know from whence you come.” He believed deeply in honesty and doing things the right way—if it wasn’t right, you did it again. His sons remember him as meticulous, principled, and unwavering in his values, a man whose word was his bond.
Family was the center of Peter’s life—family as he defined it, extending well beyond DNA. He shared his life with his beloved wife Jeanne and cherished the memory of his late wife Diane. He is survived by his sons John, Kevin, and Christopher, along with daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his “virtual daughter,” Gina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Rita, and his brother David.
Peter also held a special place in his heart for the animals who shared his life. Among them were two beloved dogs, Connie, a gentle St. Bernard, and Heidi, a sweet German Shepherd, as well as cats Sandy, Susie, and Simba—each remembered with affection.
Peter’s life was filled with memorable stories. From growing up under wartime bombs to living through historic upheavals across the world, he experienced more than most lifetimes hold. Despite witnessing conflict and unrest throughout his early years, he emerged as a man of peace, kindness, and humor. Even his lessons to his sons carried unforgettable moments—once demonstrating the importance of caution with power tools in a near-miss accident that instilled a lifelong respect (and perhaps fear) of chainsaws.
Peter will be remembered for his love of life, his loyalty to friends and family, and for being the steady rock that so many relied upon. He was a man whose principles never wavered and whose generosity of spirit touched countless lives.
A celebration of his life will be held at a luncheon on Saturday, April 11, 2026, details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Voices for Lee County FL Animals at this link: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/please-consider-an-end-of-year-donation-to-voices or Wounded Warriors.
As his family reflects on his life, they know that the pain felt today is simply the price paid for the privilege of knowing and loving such an extraordinary man.
Boed i chi orffwys mewn heddwch — may your soul rest in peace.
