Philip David Hornstein, a genuine and talented Christian man who always uplifted those around him with his smile and good sense of humor; passed away early Friday morning, April 17, 2026 in Lake Wales, Florida.  Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on August 1st 1951, Phil became a gifted song-writer with a beautiful voice and musical talent. Phil left North Dakota to move to Valdez, Alaska for 10 years where he worked on the pipeline, attended church, and made goodfriends (The Arts Family), before moving to Hawaii. He brought warmth and encouragement as a worship leader wherever he went, touching lives through his faith, music and gentle spirit.

Phil's degree in Journalism was apparent in the many songs he wrote and played.  He was priviledged to lead worship and share his faith in many states and countries, while on his missionary outreach in Asia with his Youth With a Mission outreach team and the several churches he attended. One of his favorite stories began on a missions trip when - seasick on a "slow boat to China" - he met Marlene.  What started there blossomed into a 34 year marriage, following 3 years of long-distance communication.  Phil and Marlene both finally ended up Kona HI, and were married shortly afterward.  Philip later ran his own carpentry/paint contracting business in Colorado Springs for 20 years and retired with Marlene in Florida.

Phil is survived by his wife Marlene, his son Justin and his step-daughter Jocelyn.  He is also survived by brothers Michael, Matt and Steve and by his dear Aunt Mary-Ellen. He is preceded in death by his father Tony, mother Janet, and sister Stephanie. He was a faithful husband and father, a loving brother and nephew.  To many others he was a true friend, anointed singer-song writer and a genuinely nice man.  His legacy lives on in the songs he wrote, the people he encouraged and the faith he shared.

Philip developed prostate cancer 6 years ago and later dementia which finally led to his recent death. Details for his memorial service will be shared with family and friends when plans are finalized.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Phil's memory may be made to Youth With A Mission - Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, a ministry close to his heart.  We look forward to celebrating Phil's life at his forthcoming memorial service.
