Rafael Diomedes Gomez
Rafael Diomedes Gomez, 85, of Santo Domingo, passed away on July 20, 2026. He was born on August 16, 1940, in Santo Domingo, a place that shaped his early years and the foundation of a life defined by courage, humor, and steadfast logic.
Rafael served as a sailor in the Dominican Navy during the adjudication of dictator Rafael Trujillo in the 1960s. In a moment of historic significance, he delivered the Morse code message announcing Trujillo’s fall—an act that reflected both his bravery and his steady composure under pressure. He later immigrated to New York, where his family grew and his descendants were born. Throughout his life, he took quiet pride in simple but telling accomplishments: he never received a ticket and never had an accident, small testaments to his careful and deliberate nature.
Known for being logical, funny, and brave, Rafael was equally remembered for his unfiltered, often unhinged stories, told with complete confidence and a sharp sense of humor. He loved cooking, though he enjoyed eating even more, and meals were often accompanied by lively conversation. He believed in being present and available to help anyone in need, regardless of whether there was a personal relationship. Those who knew him understood that if you called, he would answer.
The most important people in Rafael’s life were his mother, his daughter Mary, and his beloved dog, in that order. He shared a special bond with his pets, Princess and Lucas. When he first met Mary’s future husband, Marqui, he doubted the long-haired young man’s character, never shy about his opinions. That same young man would go on to care for him alongside Mary as if he were one of his own sons. Even in his final days, Rafael reminded him to get a haircut, holding firm to his belief in being well kept.
The Perez Gomez family wishes to thank Gentiva Hospice, UCF Hospital, and every home health aide who assisted in Rafael’s care; your support and empathy did not go unnoticed. Rafael leaves behind a legacy of courage, candor, loyalty, and a readiness to help others that will long be remembered by those who knew and loved him.
