Richard Joseph Zeher

Richard Joseph Zeher, 72, passed away on June 8, 2026. Born on May 26, 1954, in the Bronx, New York, Richard lived a life defined by curiosity, generosity, and an abiding belief in the potential of others. A gifted student, he graduated high school early and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Lehman College in 1975, followed by a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Florida Atlantic University in 1992. Certified in the state of Florida since 1978 with multiple endorsements, he dedicated many years to education before retiring from the Broward County School System in 2011.

Richard was loving, enigmatic, and magnanimous in equal measure. Compassionate and attentive, he listened without judgment and had a rare ability to help others find their own answers rather than impose advice. A true Gemini, he delighted in thoughtful debate and lifelong learning, believing that every person had something to teach him. His interests were eclectic—ranging from the arts and antiques to the beach, real estate, politics, and spirited discussion. Known for his playful sense of humor, quick wit, and knack for spotting a good deal, he connected easily with others, often greeting new acquaintances as future friends.

After the loss of his birth family, Richard created a chosen family whom he loved fiercely. For 27 years, Lucius Bray was his devoted life partner. He also cherished his lifelong friendship with Lori Napolitano-Brusca, whom he considered a sister, and took great joy in her sons, John and Justin Brusca. His circle extended widely to include dear friends and former students, whose updates and accomplishments filled him with pride. He often reminisced about his childhood in New York and summers on his grandfather’s farm, and he liked to joke that his greatest achievement was playing the Tinman in his middle school production of The Wizard of Oz—“He could have been a star,” he would say.

Richard believed deeply in self-improvement and personal responsibility, often reminding others, “Life is a Lesson; you are responsibility for your own happiness. If you don't like something, you have the power to change it. Use your tools: mind, education, connections, and finances, to create your own world.” He sought to practice small acts of kindness each day and considered it an honor to help others improve their world.
