Surendra Kumar Saxena, age 89, died on June 18, 2026. He was born on October 4, 1936, in Chhindwara, India, and went on to build a life defined by intellectual curiosity, rigorous scholarship, and deep devotion to family. A pioneering, dedicated, and compassionate man, Surendra’s influence reached across continents and generations.

Over a remarkable career spanning more than 55 years as a research scientist, Surendra made lasting contributions to geochemistry, particularly in advancing understanding of the Earth’s deep interior. He published more than 400 scientific papers and held professorships at Brooklyn College, Uppsala University, and Florida International University, later becoming Emeritus Professor at both Uppsala and FIU. He was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the body that awards the Nobel Prize, and received the Rubeck Medal as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Padova. In addition to his academic work, he held patents on novel chemical processes for producing hydrogen. Yet beyond his accolades, he was most proud of mentoring and training generations of young scientists around the world, taking genuine interest in their growth and success.

Surendra’s passions extended beyond the laboratory. He found joy in Indian cooking and in bringing people together around a shared table. His humor was legendary; his jokes at conferences and gatherings were always a hit, lightening even the most serious scientific discussions. At home, he cherished time with his loving wife, Mona, and his children, Manu and Maya, whose accomplishments and happiness meant everything to him. Throughout his life, he treasured his dogs—beginning with Masha and continuing with Yoda, Moogie, Droplet, Lilla My, Moose, Miranda, Theo, and Lisa—each one a beloved companion.

He will be remembered above all for his pioneering work in geochemistry and for the generosity with which he shared his knowledge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to any organization that helps children. The family wishes to thank all their friends and neighbors for their support and well-wishes during this time.
