Thomas H Wentz, III

Thomas H Wentz, III, 82, passed away on February 6, 2026. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on May 31, 1943, to Thomas H Wentz and Mary Jane Miller Wentz.  Thomas’s life was defined by devotion, care, and passion—qualities that guided his relationships, work, and service. He was best known for a boundless kindness, a ready sense of humor, and a generous spirit that lifted others and strengthened the communities he loved.

A graduate of the Perkiomen School, Pennsburg Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Grove City College in Pennsylvania.  This was followed by Juris Doctorate from Mercer Law School, Macon Georgia.

Thomas built a distinguished career as a successful attorney, later dedicating his retirement to philanthropy and cultural stewardship. A gentleman farmer and avid gardener, he found peace in tending the land with the help of Ethan Martin, finding joy in sharing its bounty. A steadfast supporter of the arts, education, and human services, he gave his time and resources to organizations including Trinity Lutheran Church; Lancaster Symphony Orchestra; the Fulton, Gretna, EPAC and Asolo Theaters; Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Opera; the Royal Oak Foundation; Crossnet Ministries; All Faiths Food Bank; Colonial Williamsburg Burgesses; Winterthur; the Ringling Museum; and the Children’s Guardian Fund. An active Member of the Sarasota Garden Club as well as the Pennsylvania and Maryland Horticultural and the Oregon Hardy Plant Society. Travel broadened his world and deepened his gratitude; he especially cherished journeys through England and Europe, where history, music, and gardens intertwined with friendships and memories he treasured.

At the heart of Thomas’s life was love. He shared his days with his beloved spouse, James J. Whalen, whose companionship of Thirty-Eight years was his greatest blessing. He was also cherished by Jim and David Wentz, Mary Martin, and Steve Forry, along with a wide circle of friends who knew him as “Tommy” and felt the warmth of his welcome. To each, he offered steady encouragement, thoughtful counsel, and laughter that lingers still.

Honoring Thomas’s wishes, a private graveside service will take place in Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Crossnet Ministries Food Bank, PO Box 154, New Holland, Pennsylvania, 17557 or All Faiths Food Bank, 8171 Blaikie Ct., Sarasota, Florida 34240—causes Thomas championed with gratitude and resolve. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Tidewell Hospice House for their excellent, compassionate care of Tommy. May we remember him most for his kindness and his generous spirit and may the gardens he tended—in the earth and in our hearts—continue to grow.
