William Leland Shimer
William Leland Shimer, 77, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away on June 17, 2026. Born on March 2, 1949, in Chicago, Bill lived a life defined by faith, devotion, and steadfast service to others. Caring, passionate, and courageous, he was known above all for serving others and loving his family with his whole heart.
Bill devoted 39 years to the Army and National Guard, retiring with honor as a Sergeant Major. His military career reflected the discipline, integrity, and leadership that shaped every part of his life. Beyond his service to his country, he gave generously of his time and talents in his community. He was an active member of the Gulf Coast Amateur Radio Club and the Lakes Area Amateur Radio Club, and he faithfully contributed and volunteered at Word of Life and Hudson Avenue Community Church in Hunsdon, Florida. Whether through ham radio, music, or quiet acts of kindness, Bill found joy in using his gifts to bless others. His life was rooted in serving Jesus and bringing glory to God through practical, everyday acts of love.
His wife, sons, grandchildren, and extended family were the center of his world. Bill prayed for his family by name every day, a reflection of the deep care and spiritual leadership he carried into his home. He was often heard asking with a smile, “Want to get breakfast?”—a simple invitation that spoke to his love of fellowship and time spent together. Near the end of his life, he found special companionship in Blessing, his black cat, whose name reflected Bill’s grateful heart.
A memorial service will be held at Hudson Avenue Community Church on July 22 at 10:30 a.m., followed by a light lunch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Word of Life Camp Program in his memory. The family extends heartfelt thanks for the love and support shown to them during this time. Bill loved to serve and help others, and the outpouring of care has been, in their words, a tremendous blessing from God.
